About

One of Bangkok's most recognisable landmarks, standing on the Thonburi bank of the Chao Phraya River facing the Grand Palace. Its soaring central prang, encrusted with colored porcelain and seashell mosaics, gives the "Temple of Dawn" its name and once earned it a place on Thailand's 10-baht banknote.

A temple has stood on this site since at least the Ayutthaya period. It takes its name from Aruna, the Hindu god of dawn, commemorating King Taksin's arrival at the spot at first light after the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767; under Taksin the temple briefly housed the Emerald Buddha before it was moved to Wat Phra Kaew. The temple's iconic central prang was raised to its present height of roughly 70 metres during the reign of King Rama II and completed under King Rama III around 1851, decorated in a Khmer-influenced style with fragments of Chinese porcelain and glass.
