About

A temple in Bangkok's Banglamphu area, popularly known as "Wat In" — one of the temples most associated with Somdej Toh amulets, and home to Luang Pho To, a 32-metre gold-mosaic standing Buddha visible across the neighbourhood skyline.

Wat Intharawihan predates the founding of Bangkok and was substantially developed under the patronage of Somdej Phra Buddhacharn (Toh) Phrommarangsi, who initiated construction of the giant standing Buddha image, Luang Pho To (Phra Buddha Sri Ariyametrai), in the 1860s. The statue was not completed until 1927, more than fifty years after Somdej Toh's death, and was later clad in glass mosaic and gold leaf; a relic gifted by Sri Lanka was enshrined in its topknot in 1978. In the amulet-collecting world the temple is remembered as one of the temples, alongside Wat Rakhang, linked to Somdej Toh's amulets.
