About

A royal temple on the Thonburi bank of the Chao Phraya River, opposite the Grand Palace, best known in the amulet-collecting world as the home temple of Somdej Phra Buddhacharn (Toh) Phrommarangsi and the birthplace of the Phra Somdej Wat Rakang amulet.

Wat Rakhang Kositaram Woramahawihan dates to the Ayutthaya period, when it was known as Wat Bang Wa Yai. It was renamed "Wat Rakhang" (Temple of the Bells) after a set of large bells discovered on the grounds during the reign of King Rama I, one of which was moved to Wat Phra Kaew. The temple is revered above all for its association with Somdej Phra Buddhacharn (Toh) Phrommarangsi (1788-1872), who lived and taught here and produced the Phra Somdej Wat Rakang — widely regarded as the single most celebrated Buddhist amulet in Thailand, and the benchmark against which countless other Somdej-style amulets are judged.
